Dear All,

For those who are in Athens, or planning to come the next days, here is our project
"Terrains Vagues" that will be help from today May 4th - May 14th in Metamatic The Art Foundation (Normanou 5, Monastiraki).

http://theartfoundation.metamatic.gr/GR/Event/3987/Terrains_Vagues/

Τhe project Τerrains Vagues proposes an exploration and re-examination of the urban vacancy through a series of performative and research activities. Departing from the assumption that the very concept of the ruin is interwoven with urban exploration, Terrains Vagues invites the walker to listen to the weaving of the contemporary urban landscape through its continuities and discontinuities.

Τhe project consists of walks and workshops in public spaces of Athens, as well as screenings and a sound installation in the exhibition spaces of T.A.F. / The Art Foundation. The closed gallery space will be functioning as an open studio for the students of the Fine Art School of Athens.

Walks & workshops

Walk functions as a subjective physical relationship with the material environment and as performance it explores the boundary between the internal and external environment. Promenadology (Spaziergangswissenschaft), as a research and learning method, connects the environment with the stroller, attributing consciousness to the artistic procedure.

Giorgos Papamatthaiakis - Big Olive | Urban Fermentations
Saturday 13/5, 12.00

The areas west of Athens have nested the productive sector of the Greek capital throughout the 20th century. The districts around Omonoia, in particular, have successfully catered to a palimpsest of populations of various classes and ethnic groups. Contemporary practices and beliefs gradually led secondary industries out of town, leaving remnants of production spaces behind; empty building carcasses and brownfields are today landscapes of potential development.

This stroll follows the social fermentation and mutations in the former productive areas of Psyrri, Metaxourgheio and Kerameikos. It tells a story of successive expansion, dislocation and gentrification by providing a deeper insight into the current urban geography of developing territories of the center.

Nikos Magouliotis - Big Olive | Spolio-logy of Athens
Sunday 14/5, 18.00

Athens is a city assembled by a variety of fragments of different  historical phases. Its present image is co-formed by many layers of history, often simultaneously visible and in unexpected  continuities. The walk Spoliology of Athens on Philopappou Hill will focus on the architecture of the city and how its architectural fragments (spolia, as named by archaeologists) have been used in different cases for the construction of the incongruous mosaic of the city and its buildings.

Sound installation

Dana Papachristou | Lines of flight

This work consists of a series of soundscape compositions and echoing urban silences.  The pre-recorded audio material is part of a single composition but its placement in T.A.F. exhibition rooms around the courtyard, prevents its hearing as such.

The sound installation is exhibited in an environment that is in itself a historically charged place. The rooms of the T.A.F complex constitute ruins of a building dating back to the late 1800s. Over the years, these spaces have acquired many different uses, while in the 1950s they were inhabited by many families relocating to Athens as part of a wider migration wave. Since 2009, the rooms have been used as a unique venue for contemporary art exhibitions, hosting artworks, performances, in situ installations, and sometimes operating as an open studio for projects in progress. The rooms are nothing more than a palimpsest of multiple meanings and memories that are constantly recorded on the partially erased traces of previous interventions.
