CALL FOR AN EDITOR AND A SOCIAL MEDIA EDITOR OF URBAN GEOGRAPHY

Applications due August 31, 2017

Urban Geography has two editorial openings. The first is for an editor and the second is for a social media editor.

Urban Geography was established in 1980 by Victor H. Winston, in partnership with the Urban Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. Since January 2013 Urban Geography has been published by Taylor & Francis. Taylor & Francis provide Urban Geography with support for editorial responsibilities, with resources allocated by negotiation amongst the Senior Editorial Team. The journal is ranked 13/39 in Urban Studies and 33/77 in Geography (2015, JCR classification), with an impact factor of 1.322.

The journal has a rich history of publishing conceptually, empirically and methodologically innovative research undertaken in cities across the world. It sees itself as the outlet for the most cutting-edge, innovative work currently being undertaken in urban studies, focusing on cities and metropolitan regions as dynamic material and cultural-symbolic phenomena and processes that demand continuous critical appraisal. A spatial “sensibility” is to be integrated subtly or overtly into all manuscripts. The journal’s mission is to publish (1) articles that are conceptually and/or methodologically innovative and empirically grounded; (2) essays and debates on current conceptual and policy concerns; and (3) timely book reviews. Manuscripts that advance quantitative and qualitative methods are equally valued. Both are identified as different but valuable methodological modes that offer important new conceptual understandings and new policy insights in the urban world.

Editor position

The first opening is for an editor to join Thomas Cooke and Ayona Datta as front-line editors while Kevin Ward takes over as editor-in-chief when the current post-holder Richard Shearmur’s term of office ends in December 2017.

Editors are involved in the operational and strategic leadership of the journal. Strategically they work as part of the Senior Editorial Team to deliver the journal’s mission, ensuring it publishes the best of urban geography, working with an inclusive and progressive agenda. Operationally, editors are responsible for soliciting, reviewing, and rendering decisions on manuscript submissions, and attending the annual Editorial Board meetings held at the AAG (although applicants who may envisage travel difficulties can participate by Skype or similar means and are in no way discouraged from applying). Urban Geography publishes 10 issues annually, each containing five to seven research manuscripts in addition to book reviews, editorials, and other special features. Over the year an editor will normally process between 60 and 80 submissions and the submission and review process occurs on line through the Editorial Manager system.

Applicants must have strong organizational and managerial skills, an ability and willingness to work collaboratively on editorial tasks, and a commitment to the mission of Urban Geography. The successful candidate is likely to be a tenured academic, with some experience in editing journals, special issues and/or edited books. They will feel comfortable dealing with a wide range of papers using varied methodologies and focusing on cities in a variety of cultural and national contexts, such as Chinese and other Asian cities.

Social media editor position

The second opening is for a social media editor to join the journal’s Senior Editorial Team. This new position reflects the journal’s commitment to explore ways of making more strategic use of various communications and social media channels. It will involve working closely both with Taylor & Francis, the publishers of Urban Geography, and the authors of published papers to promote the contents of the journal. The focus will be on developing a strategy to connect the journal’s existing presence in the different social media channels and then thinking through how these might be better integrated and optimized.

Applicants must have experience of working across a range of social medial channels including facebook, instagram, youtube, twitter and wordpress. They should have strong creative and organizational skills, a willingness to work as part of a team and a commitment to the mission of Urban Geography. The successful candidate is likely to be an early career academic, with experience of using social media channels in either their professional or personal lives.

Both editors will serve an initial term of three years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years.

Application process

Applicants should submit a one-page vision statement and outline of qualifications for the position, along with a two page c.v. The due date for applications for both positions is August 15 2017. Please submit materials to Richard Shearmur ([log in to unmask]) under the subject line of either, “Urban Geography Editor” or “Urban Geography Social Media Editor”. Applicants will be contacted by mid-September, and a final decision taken by the end of October 2017.

The editor will begin to shadow current editors in November 2017, fully taking on the role on 1 January 2018. The social media editor will take up their post on 1 January 2018.

Inquiries regarding editorial practices and responsibilities may be directed either to Richard Shearmur, [log in to unmask] or Kevin Ward, [log in to unmask]
