Hi Roz

We recently did a review of our insurance valuations. We applied for a grant from the Museums Valuations Charitable Trust, which covered the cost of a specialist valuer. He gave us the “market value”, but he also gave us a value based on how much it would cost to conserve items (if they were damaged in a fire) or for archaeology, how much it would cost to carry out a dig to replace items. It is now this figure that we use for our insurance, rather than the market value since, as Jane says, for most objects in our collection it is the local story that is important so we wouldn’t be able to simply purchase a replacement.

It might be worth approaching it this way and working out how much it would cost to employ a conservator for a number of months/years etc. I’m happy to discuss this further or share some of our values, if that’s helpful.

THis depends on whether you needto have 'evidence' of valuation, in which case you need an outside assessor. A local auctioneer may oblige for random domestic items, but needs paid.

Otherwise you may get "some idea" from eBay etc if you're allowed to estimate yourself.

You won't be selling the collection and it's probably "irreplaceable" due to its being locally important, so the valuation may always be irrelevant to its worth to the collection.

In this case absolute accuracy may not be necessary.

Dear All,

I’ve been asked for some valuations for part of the collection in relation to insurance.
In the past I’ve managed to fight back/get a specialist in for specialist collections but I’m being less successful this time around in relation to massive social history objects like mangles. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for valuations of standard social history stuff?

With many thanks,
Roz
