Hello all,

On Wednesday 31st May, Technicians Make it Happen will officially be launching the #ActualLivingTechnician hashtag to coincide with the Higher Education Technicians Summit 2017. After the success of #ActualLivingScientist in opening up the real work of scientists to the public, we now believe it is time for everyone to understand all the amazing things technicians make happen.

We’ll be inviting all technicians to tweet a photograph of yourself at work, with a small description of who you are and what you do, along with our hashtag #ActualLivingTechnician. Scientist and engineers, and any other colleagues of technicians, we also invite you to share photographs of the technicians you work with, to emphasise just how integral they are to the work of so many industries.

I will send out another email on the morning of Wednesday May 31st to remind everyone to tweet. There are around 1.5 million technicians currently working in the UK - let’s see how many we can get tweeting on the day!

Please do get in contact if you would like to help spread the message, or if your organisation would like to host a guest #ActualLivingTechnician blog post on the day of the launch.

Background information
The UK needs around 70,000 new technicians each year to replace those retiring or to fill new posts. Technicians are the linchpins of the UK economy, their skills are integral to many of our country’s high-growth areas, including the aerospace, chemical, information technology, engineering and manufacturing industries. If the UK is to address its skills shortage, the contributions that technicians make to society must be much better understood and valued. That is why last year the Gatsby Charitable Foundation launched ‘Technicians Make it Happen’ (see more at www.technicians.org.uk<http://www.technicians.org.uk>), a campaign that is working with employers and partners to celebrate the UK’s technicians and broaden society’s understanding of the vital work they do. You can follow Technicians Make it Happen on Twitter at www.twitter.com/technicians_mih<http://www.twitter.com/technicians_mih>.

Many thanks!
