Dear All,
Apologies for cross posting. Please find attached the details of the next Collections Seminar Event at the NHM.
Collecting the World: The Life and Curiosity of Hans Sloane.
This is the first modern biography of Hans Sloane, one of the seminal figures in 18th century England. He made his fortune as a society doctor and as physician to the royal family,
through his links to the slave trade and through his substantial property investments in Chelsea, many of whose streets still carry his name. Taking advantage of England’s expanding imperial and trading influence; Sloane established his reputation as a leading
naturalist to become the greatest collector of his age and the centre of a global network of travellers and agents who knew he would pay for anything that interested him.
Speaker: James Delbourgo
Is a British historian educated at East Anglia, Cambridge and Columbia Universities, who specializes in the Enlightenment. In 2008, he became Associate Professor in the History of Science and
the Atlantic World at Rutgers University.
