Subject: RE: sealing wood with varnish

Dear Helen

In July 2015 the British Museum announced it was undertaking a survey of coatings and sealants, supported by the Clothworkers Foundation, with Giulia Bertolotti as the contact. I think Giulia has moved to Tobit Curteis and Julie Phippard may now be leading on this project. I have copied her in to this email as she may not be on the NATSCA list.

If you use Dacrylate you want the clear varnish 103-1, three coats, applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

It’s available from Bailey Paints in Stroud www.baileypaints.co.uk but there may be suppliers nearer to you.

Hope this helps

All the best

Helena

Dear all

We’ve just had some lovely carry boxes made for some of our ship models (realise it’s not NH but you all know so much!).

They are made from ply-wood and we want to seal them to limit off-gassing.

Is Dacrylate still recommended – and if so, what particular product?

Any other suggestions – do not want to cover with foil : )

Many thanks, Helen
