If you know you ‘have to publish’, but don’t know the history, politics and financial power structures behind why – come to this event!

Historian of scholarly publishing, Dr Aileen Fyfe will offer a historical perspective to inform the debates about the future of academic publishing. Focusing on the twentieth century, she will address the transformations in both the business of academic publishing, and the role of publishing in academic careers – as well as the tangled and changing relationship between them.

Her talk will be followed by the official launch of an important new briefing paper, ‘Untangling Academic Publishing: a history of the relationship between commercial interests, academic prestige and the circulation of knowledge’, co-authored by Aileen Fyfe, Kelly Coate, Stephen Curry, Stuart Lawson, Noah Moxham and Camilla Mørk Røstvik. The paper argues that current policy regarding open access publishing, and many of the other proposals for reform of academic publishing, have been too focused on the opportunities and financial challenges relating to the most recent changes in digital communications technologies, and have given undue weight to commercial concerns.

Venue: Lecture Hall, The British Academy, 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London

Time: 6.30-8.30pm, Thursday 25 May 2017

The event is free but ticketed: please register via Eventbrite, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/untangling-academic-publishing-tickets-34135350753
