Kate,
NG London have a Lucida 3D scanner for painting scans.

Another 'world class' UK museum I know has recently tested an Arius scanner.

I was at the Rijksmuseum last week for the 2&3d photography conference and do not believe they are yet 3d scanning their paintings, but they are doing sculpture with a Photorobot.

The end usage of this equipment for paintings I believe is just for conservation at the moment.

Tony

Dear all,

Have any of you created virtual reality worlds where objects like paintings are reproduced in 3D - ie so you can see the fact that they are lumpy with brushstrokes (or just that the paper has a grain), rather than 2D as in a basic image digitisation project? There are a couple of articles onlines about 3D printing artworks:

- but I don't think even the Rijksmuseum has got that far (and I wondered to what extent they'd end up looking a bit plastic-y like so much 3D print does so far). And I haven't come across anyone using that in VR. Anyone taken steps in this direction for a museum project?

Thanks as ever,

Kate
