We are pleased to announce a new face-to-face course, “DPTP: An Introduction to Digital Preservation planning for Research Managers”, taking place on 25 May 2017, Senate House, London. 

This one-day course is an introduction to digital preservation and is specifically designed to look at planning for preservation from the perspective of the research data manager.

 Digital preservation – the management and safeguarding of digital content for the long-term – is becoming increasingly important for research data managers. As more and more content is born-digital, the need to ensure that it remains accessible and authentic over time is starting to impact on research data management.

 

About The Course

Using a combination of tutor-led sessions and group work/discussions, the course is an introduction to digital preservation, specifically designed to look at planning for long-term preservation from the perspective of the research data manager.

·         What is digital preservation?

Find out about digital preservation and how and why it is important in the context of research data

·         Assess your research data

Develop an understanding of how digital objects behave and how you can make sure they survive for the longer term

·         Your Research Data Management plan

Learn how your plan can be adapted to intersect with preservation actions

·         Timing of interventions

Learn about managing content beyond the life of projects, capturing contextual information

·         Understanding drivers

A comprehensive summary of the key drivers and reasons for why you or your institution would want to preserve

Develop an understanding of why preservation storage has extra requirements beyond traditional IT storage

Learn how to plan for migration, as a strategy, and also what tools you can use

Learn about benefits, risks and costs and how you can use them to persuade your institution why digital

Course Tutors

Ed Pinsent is part of the team that developed the award-winning original Digital Preservation Training Programme. Ed is a senior archivist based within the Academic Research Technologies team at the University of London, and has been involved in all aspects of digital preservation since 2004. He has a traditional archivist and records manager background, and brings to his teaching a wide range of skills and experience from numerous digital preservation projects.  

Steph Taylor is a digital librarian with a wide experience of copyright and legal issues in the digital domain as applied to libraries, archives & institutional repositories. Steph has worked with repositories, research publications, research data and research information and is currently Senior Consultant at the University of London and a tutor on the DPTP.
