Multifaceted Women:
Between Stage and Page
ORGANIZER: Stefano Santosuosso (University of Reading)
This panel (or series of panels) seeks to explore the role and the contribution of women writers-performers in the 16th and early 17th centuries. In particular, this panel(s) aim(s) at gathering
papers focusing on the close relationship between written works and performance by women in the Renaissance
piazze, courts, academies, and universities.
As many recent studies have shown, women artists have frequently found a way to disentangle themselves from the grip of ‘male’ censorship thanks to their exceptional skills as writers and/or as performers. More specifically,
it is no so rare to find that the multifaceted profession of women writers-performers allowed them to play on the border line of gender disguise and other modes of role-playing.
In order to bring into focus the specific share of female figures and their written works, we welcome proposals on, but not limited to, the following subjects:
- Links between stage-centered and text-centered approaches;
- Networks and relationships between female authors and performers;
- The role played by the ‘orality’ on printed/manuscript works and/or performances by women;
- The influence of religious institutions and censorship on women’s writing and performances;
- Links with other Arts (Music, Theatre)
Please submit your paper proposal by 21st May to Stefano Santosuosso (santosuosso.stefano@libero.it)
in a 1-page document including your name, affiliation, email address; a paper title (15-word maximum); abstract (150-word maximum); five keywords; a brief Cv (300-word maximum). Please follow the RSA guidelines for Cv (CV
guidelines and models) and abstract (abstract guidelines).
