BOOK LAUNCH
Francesca Calamita: Linguaggi dell'esperienza femminile: disturbi alimentari, donne e scrittura dall'Unità al Miracolo Economico

Room 243, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU

Anorexia and bulimia are perceived by the feminist discourse as a paradoxical way to question the socio-cultural constrictions of women's position in patriarchal culture. Linguaggi dell'esperienza femminile demonstrates that before feminist scholars identified the link between social context and eating disorders in the 1970-80s, Italian women writers portrayed female characters who used the language of food and the body as means of rebellion against patriarchal repression. Francesca Calamita decodes a controversial female experience and the language Italian women writers used to express it before it became officially acknowledged as a pathology that reflects women's anxiety about their identity.

Introduction by Dr Adalgisa Giorgio, University of Bath, followed by author's discussion

Francesca Calamita teaches Italian Studies and Women, Gender and Sexuality at the University of Virginia. She holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington and in 2013/2014 was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for the Studies of Contemporary Women's Writing. Her interdisciplinary research-transnational and anchored in feminist theory-bridges Italian women's writing, cultural studies and gender studies. More specifically, she investigates how women's relationship with food and body is portrayed in fiction, pop culture, advertisements, video performances and films. She is currently coediting (with Petra Bagley and Kathryn Robson) a volume on anorexia and bulimia in post-1968 French, German and Italian women's writing under contract with the series "Studies in Contemporary Women's Writing", Peter Lang.
