The School of Media, Communication, and Sociology is pleased to invite you to a screening and discussion of Eylem Atakav’s documentary film
Growing Up Married. This film focuses on child brides in Turkey, where 1 in 3 marriages will include a child. This documentary showcases the experiences of four women married as children and aims to stimulate research and debate on this significant human
rights issue.
We are happy to host the filmmaker and a range of distinguished guests to participate in a roundtable discussion on the topic of global gender-based activism and the role of media for raising awareness and informing policy. This panel discussion
will be followed by an audience question and answer period, and the event is open to all members of staff, students, as well as the public.

Dr Eylem Atakav, filmmaker and Senior Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia.
MP Baroness Jenny Tonge, joint chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health, and author of “A Childhood Lost”, a report on child marriage.
Professor Karen Boyle, Chair in Feminist Media Studies and Co-Director of the Centre for Gender and Feminist Studies at the University of Stirling.
Dr Hannah Hamad, Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of East Anglia.
