Thanks to Tony, Nick and Danny for the helpful suggestions.

bit.ly appears to be great but it's not recognised in Hootsuite - which has it's own shrinker (not quite so shrinky as bit.ly though)

Copying and pasting from a rtf file into Hootsuite keeps the 3 line haiku format if you view it on a mobile, but not through Hootsuite itself or through my Firefox browser.

Anyway, I am now loading up Hootsuite with haiku and images scheduled for a daily punt into Twitter and Facebook.

Best, Andrew

bit.ly is a very popular URL shortener, though I've not used it in anger for a few years.

Try holding down the control or shift key and pressing return in your Twitter client or web browser to get a newline character.

Best regards,

Most twitter clients including web seem to fully support line breaks & that seems to be the way most people do haiku on twitter. See eg:

2. Two of the walkshops are all about composing and writing haiku - those nifty 3 line poems with limited syllables.  In the run up to the Week, we have been asked to Tweet a (Tree) haiku a day, but can you tell us how we can retain the three line format in a Tweet? e.g.

A 3 line format

Each poetry line beneath

The one line before

The accepted wisdom seems to be to break the lines with a slash.

e.g.

A 3 line format / Each poetry line beneath / The one line before // #treeweek
