Hi Louise,

We only allow a human reader for the Writing paper as it would not be permitted for the Reading paper however, a computer reader can be used for both reading and writing. Section 5.5 JCQ Access Arrangements Book

Thanks

Jade

Hi all,

Am I missing something here?  We don't allow readers for GCSE English because we are not able to determine which sections of the paper assess reading, for which a reader wouldn't be allowed.  It seems that the centres who have replied so far have a different interpretation of the rules - how do you work out/manage which sections the reader can read?We do allow computer readers for this subject. We discourage scribes by reminding the students about the SPAG marks that they will lose.

For GCSE maths we automatically provide shared readers except for exceptional circumstances where are student has been specifically requested to have a one to one reader.

Hi Richard

If you can get some of your students to use reading pens they can be used in exams and they do not need to have a needs assessment! Also they can then sit in the same room as people without readers as they come with head phones.

It may be idea to get them used to the pens first.

Kind regards

Subject: GCSE English & Maths Readers and Scribes

Good morning every one

I wonder if anybody out there has any possible solutions/advise/ideas to a growing problem that we have here at Stafford.

There seems to have been an explosion in the number of candidates that are requiring the use of readers and scribes for the forthcoming GCSE English and Maths exams, I am having real problems in persuading willing (or even un willing) volunteers to step forward. Staffing levels have been reduced and are about to kick in, here, at the end of this week

Do any of you use

·        Shared Readers/Scribes

·        Assistive Technology

·        Any other left field ideas??

If so do these present any difficulties that I need to be aware of, if, as it looks increasingly possible, I have to explore different avenues

Oh the joys of summer exams

Thanks

Richard
