Dear all,

we would like to draw your attention to the Call for Abstracts for the
Special Session (SS15) on “Knowledge, Creativity and New Urban Dynamics:
What Opportunities for Low Density Regions?” of the 24th Congress of the
Portuguese Association of Regional Development “Intellectual Capital and
Regional Development: New landscapes and challenges for space planning”.
The congress will be held in Covilha (Portugal), 6-7 July 2017. Here
follows a brief description of the scope and topics of this special session.

The role of knowledge and creativity in fostering local and regional
competitiveness has been widely explored in many high- and medium-density
regions of Central and North Europe. However, little has been done related
to regions from south-western European regions with low population,
institutional and relational density, like the case of the countryside
regions of Portugal and Spain. Interestingly, knowledge-based and
creativity-based approaches to local development emerge as a new fertile
terrain to explore. The creation of new niches of excellence in the field
of creative business and entrepreneurship, culture and university teaching
and research appear as a vibrant opportunity to permit Portugal's and
Spain's low-density regions to create a new efficient, sustainable and
innovative organizational and instrumental armor capable of integrating
such low-density territories into new joint transnational actions of
scientific, cultural and economic development.

Contributions participating in this special session on “Knowledge,
Creativity and New Urban Dynamics in Low Density Regions” will focus on one
or more topics below mentioned:

1. The role of university in future social, cultural, economic development
of countryside small cities;
2. New policy and governance actions facing transnational processes of
urban change;
3. Smart and sustainable livability and mobility;
4. The integration of low-density regions and/or small-sized cities in the
global urban system;
5. Post-rural places in motion: The politics of proximity, creativity and
entrepreneurship in low-density regions

We invite you to write a 400-word abstract and send it through the online
platform of the congress: (
http://www.apdr.pt/congresso/2017/abstractpaper-submission.html) by 28
April 2017 as latest. For any further information or question you may
require, you can email us (Ass. Prof. Domingos Vaz: [log in to unmask]; Prof.
Luís Baptista: [log in to unmask]; Dr. Jordi Nofre: [log in to unmask]).
