Dear all,

Band 8a Principal Clinical Scientist

Job reference: 284-SB221-17

A vacancy has arisen for this post in a major UK city centre paediatric hospital.  Birmingham Children’s Hospital (part of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust) provides secondary and tertiary services for a range of specialties including hepatology, nephrology, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and clinical inherited metabolic disorders.  It also provides general paediatric care and has a paediatric Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.  The Newborn Screening & Biochemical Genetics department is situated in the Paediatric Laboratory Medicine block together with the other laboratory medicine disciplines and the University Department of Child Health.  There are links with the regional genetics unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

Newborn Screening & Biochemical Genetics is a large well-equipped, CPA accredited department with regional Newborn Screening (NBS) and Inherited Metabolic Disorder (IMD) services which carry out a range of specialised work including enzymology, cell culture, molecular biology, GCMS and tandem mass spectrometry.  There are opportunities to work with a variety of clinical specialties and there is an active R&D programme.  There is close liaison with the clinical IMD team within the hospital and with the adult clinical IMD team at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust.  We also work closely with the paediatric hepatology and neurology teams.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated clinical scientist to join our team and help us deliver this highly specialist service.  The successful candidate will be a state registered clinical scientist and should have FRCPath part 1. He/she will play a role in service provision and development and will contribute to clinical liaison within the IMD section of the department.  Although not essential, experience of translating research methods into routine practice, tandem mass spectrometry or IMD would be an advantage.

Please contact Mrs Mary Anne Preece (0121 333 9940) or Dr Adam Gerrard (0121 333 9903) for an informal visit or further information.

Kind regards,

Adam
