Hi Rick,

We're pleased that our research is continuing to underpin the work of ignite!.

A recent change of guidelines on open access has allowed us to make all recent journal articles from the ASPIRES & ASPIRES 2 projects (full list available here<https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioe/departments-centres/departments/education-practice-and-society/aspires/publications>) accessible to all, and all future articles will continue to be made open access. Our sister project Enterprising Science<http://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/education/research/Research-Centres/cppr/Research/currentpro/Enterprising-Science/index.aspx> also aims to do the same, and their most recent journal article on Science Capital<http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/tea.21227/abstract> is open access. However if you come across a specific article that you can't access please let us know and we can send you a copy.

We've recently moved from King's College London to UCL's Institute of Education - you can find out more here<http://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/aspires/>. New website and contact details below.

Best wishes
Emily

many of our readers will know that Ignite! has been beavering away at what used to be called the coal face.. in the venn diagram where Citizen Science and Science Capital overlap - and we gratefully acknowledge ASPIRES at every opportunity.
https://www.ignitefutures.org.uk/<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ignitefutures.org.uk%2F&data=01%7C01%7Caspires%40KCL.AC.UK%7Cde6ec0b542d14250242f08d467975189%7C8370cf1416f34c16b83c724071654356%7C0&sdata=%2BuvtaspAFhFBuvHJLM4x91haJct908g%2Fqv3RIMnSoHQ%3D&reserved=0>
Which is why, during British Science Week, we will be running Supermarket Science tomorrow at Morrison's in Bulwell, North Nottingham, in a neighbourhood in the bottom 1% in the index of multiple disadvantage and deprivation (thanks Big Lottery);
and supporting four Lab_13 special programmes for Science Week, including in a school for children with autism (thanks STFC);
and five Come Alive With Science projects in Nottingham secondary schools for Chemistry for All (thanks RSC);
and prepping our Night Walks project for primary students from inner city Nottingham into a local Country Park at dusk (thanks Ernest Cook Trust).
If we could underpin what we do with the academic research outlined in the papers Dom has precised we would be delighted; but we can't afford £28 for one day's (or £145 for 30 days) access to an article, however relevant and pertinent.
Sorry to start the day with such a moan
cheers
Rick

Hi all

Further to the email thread a couple of months back about the Science Capital thing, I've been doing some reading...

I thought I could perform a public service by flagging up a couple of things that I have picked up, that I haven't seen on here before (although I may have missed them, in which case, apologies). The papers are both behind paywalls, I'm afraid: I don't know what we do about that.

On a practical point of view, this 2014 ASPIRES paper reports no significant change in students' attitudes to science in school between Year 6 and Year 9. This goes against what I previously understood to be the case. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09500693.2013.871659<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tandfonline.com%2Fdoi%2Fabs%2F10.1080%2F09500693.2013.871659&data=01%7C01%7Caspires%40KCL.AC.UK%7Cde6ec0b542d14250242f08d467975189%7C8370cf1416f34c16b83c724071654356%7C0&sdata=S6lr7oqDqR%2BUpn3r%2F%2B8VFQiPvgHkjwONtGbSxlY9xZE%3D&reserved=0>

Secondly, and more theoretically, this 2016 paper by Michael Reiss and Tuba Gokpinar is a really interesting way of taking some of the "cultural capital" ideas that underlie Science Capital, and tying them to some work from economics* that allows them to think about how stuff actually impacts real people's real lives. There's some pretty hardcore social theory in there, and so whilst I am tempted to try to summarise the ideas for those who can't access the paper, I fear it would take me longer than it will take you to read the paper. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09500693.2016.1188332<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tandfonline.com%2Fdoi%2Fabs%2F10.1080%2F09500693.2016.1188332&data=01%7C01%7Caspires%40KCL.AC.UK%7Cde6ec0b542d14250242f08d467975189%7C8370cf1416f34c16b83c724071654356%7C0&sdata=agey4QTGjcI0egIBESTBxSptyXMSFRsW%2FZB7JPqM2Yc%3D&reserved=0>
