Public Engagement Volunteering Opportunity

Learning Resources Department (Building Bridges Project)

Science Museum, London, SW7 2DD

The Science Museum is looking for research scientists and engineers to contribute to an educational session as part of the Building Bridges<http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/educators/special-projects/building-bridges> project.

Role Context:

'Building Bridges' is a research practice-based project aiming to inspire secondary school students (age 11-12), to explore the science that shapes their lives. The Science Museum Audience Research team is working closely with University College London to research how we can connect family culture and agendas to school, the science curriculum and informal learning settings such as the Science Museum.

As part of the project students take part in activity sessions that build their scientific literacy and skills. This public engagement opportunity involves taking part in a particular session of the project programme. Working with school groups; you will share and explain your current research with a new audience. The activity will take on a similar format to 'Show and Tell' where you will be asked to bring in an item that will be used to explain the work that you do through facilitated discussion with students.

Role of Volunteer:

* Accompanied by Science Museum staff you will be asked to engage in facilitating student's engagement with your chosen object, helping them to understand the work you do and why it is relevant to them.

* Some preparation in advance will be required for which you will be supported by the Science Museum

Commitment required:

* We ask volunteers to sign up to a minimum of two dates, as this helps us with preparing events and ensures that if a session is cancelled there is another opportunity to take part in the project.

* Volunteers will need to attend a one-day training session on Friday 7th April. Information covered will include: background to the project, specific notes about the activity session; engagement and presentation techniques. Lunch will be provided.

* Scheduled museum visit dates are already planned around school year timetables and will take place on weekdays throughout April and May. A degree of flexibility is required should there be any last minute changes

* The session may need to be delivered twice as we host up to two schools per day

Benefits:

* Participation in a public engagement project

* Working with the Learning Department at the Science Museum

*         Training:

Understanding your audience

Identifying learning outcomes

Facilitation

* Opportunities to take part in further Science Museum Public Engagement events

*         Lunch will be provided

*         Travel expenses reimbursed

How to get involved:

Please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> to discuss dates and availability and register your interest. To further understand your area of research and its suitability for the activity please could you include your answer to the following questions in your e-mail (500 words max.):

1. What's your background and area of research?

2. What would be the focus of your presentation?

3. How might you make your presentation clearly relevant to an 11-12 year old school student?

4. Do you have prior experience of presenting to young audiences?

5. What would you yourself like to get out of taking part?

Many thanks
