Let me take a contrarian view.

When distinguished people say not to go into a novel area (which they
actually don't know much about), then Go For It!

If you wish to do an important piece of work, one that changes the field,
then do NOT do what others want you to do.

Find some area that you believe is productive and interesting and charge
ahead. Defy conventional wisdom. Produce new insights that all those other
folks never dreamed of. If others give you lots of reasons why this is a
bad idea, yes, read the reasons, think about it, and follow your own mind.

Oh, and do not read too much before you start your work. If you read too
much, you will end up following everyone who went before you, falling into
their same traps.

Read the entire literature AFTER you have finished (but before you
publish). Too much prior knowledge is deadly.

What to be the leader in a field? Then lead where no one else has gone
before.

Don't be a follower. Followers simply trample the grass and provide no
useful new insights.
