Derek,

In terms of plagiarism,

DL:
> 2. The difference between hiring a copyeditor to polish original writing vs
> rewriting published arguments

GS:
The work of a copyeditor is generally expected (whether hired by the writer or the publication.) This means that a copy editing does not impact claims of plagiarism in work for publication. (It is nice to thank all editors and acknowledge the contributions of everyone who helped.)

Some student assignments explicitly or implicitly disallow others’ contributions. Some instructors even think there is a problem with students going to campus writing centers for help. I see this as an educational question rather than an ethical/plagiarism question.

DL:
> 3. The difference between copy-pasting reference material and rewriting it
> vs remembering reference material and rewriting it

GS:
If the contributions of others are properly acknowledged, neither is plagiarism. If they are not, it quite possibly plagiarism.

DL:
> 1. The difference between directing a group of people to produce a design
> vs creating it the design out of whole cloth

GS:
This is a slightly different sort of issue. Although it is traditional for, say, a design firm owner to take credit for all of the work of subordinates, it is not just obnoxious but a missed opportunity to have people think well of you.

DL:
> A friend of mine works at turnitin. He is developing the AI-assistant that
> offers students recommendations as they submit drafts, prior to turning it
> in to a human.

GS:
A good exchange with a human editor may be preferable but having a machine help someone analyze writing should only help someone’s development as a writer.
