Informing Conservation Management Decision Making at the Science Museum: Investigating the Properties of Doped Fabric Aircraft.

A project funded by the AHRC's Collaborative Doctoral Partnership scheme is running between Imperial College London and the Science Museum into the conservation of doped-fabric aircraft. Doped-fabric aircraft were common during the early 20th Century and are constructed by covering a framework in fabric, then impregnating this with a chemical compound called 'dope' to make it taut and waterproof. A lack of knowledge or research into the properties of doped-fabric has hindered conservators’ decision making when treating tears in the doped-fabric of aircraft on display. Conservators have therefore tended to rely on traditional repair techniques, such as would have been used to keep aircraft flight worthy, which it is feared may result in further damage over the longer term. This talk will present some of the techniques, results and on-going investigations into the properties of doped-fabric, and how this work may be of value to museum professionals. Chemical characterization techniques to identify the materials present have included Fourier-Transform Infra-Red and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Mechanical investigations used to determine properties such as the strength and response to environmental conditions include strain gauges and tensile testing.

We look forward to seeing you there.
