medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Hi Laura,

I looked up cornu in my Latin dictionary (Smith and Hall [1904]). I don’t have the OLD (2012) at home. Smithe and Hall give the following as one of the meanings of cornu: “wing of an army” [hence, side?]; more precisely in Lewis and Short (via Perseus): The point, end, extremity, wing of a place [B.2.l], with refs to Livy, Tacitus, and Pliny. And BWL (?) has cornu dextro vel sinistro “on the right or left wing” (from the Dictionary of Medieval Latin from British Sources [Logeion]).

That's great.  In another related document it does indeed look like cornu but I didn't think it could be!

Many thanks

Laura

Hi Laura,

“cornu epistolae”, the right side of the alter, from the point of view of the congregation. Cornu, -us can made “side”. The other side would be the “cornu euangeliae”.

I'm struggling to transcribe a document which refers to the epistle side of a church screen (at least I think that's what it's talking about) but I can't read the term for side.  It looks like 'cirnu/cornu epistole'.  A dictionary search leads to 'citra' as a possibility, but it really doesn't look like that.  What would be the usual term for 'epistle side'?

Many thanks,

Laura
