David Alderson (Manchester University) and Robert Spencer (Manchester University) will introduce and discuss their book, which includes contributions
from Barbara Epstein and Kevin Anderson.
The term “theory” has become virtually synonymous with anti-humanism, especially in its connection with politics. This new collection charts the
history of the emergence of that equivalence as well as the alternatives to it that have often been occluded. It argues powerfully for the recovery of the humanist traditions that have defined the left in the past, and for their revitalization in the future
if we are to confront and shape a world that appears disturbingly out of control.
For Humanism is
published by Pluto Press as part of the Marxism and Culture series, edited by Professor Esther Leslie (Birkbeck University) and Professor Mike Wayne (Brunel University).
‘A major intervention into contemporary discussions about the resources of political hope, For
Humanism insists upon the continuing radicalism of humanism as both a critical philosophy and a moral-political template. Each of the chapters combines scholarly rigour with passionate political commitment.’
Neil Lazarus, Professor of English and Comparative Literary Studies, University of Warwick.
