The latest happenings in the US, UK and some of the European countries beg the question of “Is multicultural society as an idea failed.”
As a byproduct of colonization, imperialism, capitalism, and globalization, multiculturalism often celebrated. It is also turned into a commodity by consumer culture to be sold to attract more audience or consumers to make higher profits. Despite their challenges
multicultural societies became exemplary models to value diversity (culturally and economically). Lately as an idea multiculturalism came under attack as the discourse of immigration became more populist (once again) both in Europe and US. Immigrants started
to be seen as the sources of societal shortcomings and economic depression. As a media and cultural studies scholar I have spent last several months to try make sense of the current political and cultural happenings. Hence, I figured writing about these will
help me to further understand the cultural milieu.
I am planning to build interconnected projects that would address issues and the future of multiculturalism, the role of media in
multicultural society, the political economy of multiculturalism and finally focus on forces between late capitalism and fall of multiculturalism.
I am interested in collaborating with others who are interested in these issues. Perhaps we can establish a working group and a research
network. Please let me know if you are interested in building and working on such projects.
