Visions
of Avant-Garde Film
Polish Cinematic Experiments from Expressionism to Constructivism
Kamila Kuc
"...an important addition to the English-language literature on experimental film in Central and Eastern Europe in the first half of the 20th century." - Marcin Gizycki, author of Polish Animated Film
Warsaw-and London-based filmmakers Franciszka and Stefan Themerson are often recognized internationally as pioneers of the 1930s Polish avant-garde. Yet, from the turn of the century to the end of the 1920s, Poland’s literary
and art scenes were also producing a rich array of criticism and early experiments with the moving image that set the stage for later developments in the avant-garde. In this comprehensive and accessible study, Kamila Kuc draws on myriad undiscovered archival
sources to tell the history of early Polish avant-garde movements—Symbolism, Expressionism, Futurism, and Constructivism—and to reveal their impact on later practices in art cinema.
Kamila Kuc is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. A writer, experimental filmmaker and curator, she
publishes widely on the subject of film and media. She has curated programs of experimental film for international film festivals and venues and her films have been screened at international film festivals.

Theory of Practice/Practice of Theory:
Thinking Through Making Symposium, Coventry University
Organised by Dr Kamila Kuc and Dr Miriam de Rosa. Chaired by Dr Janneke Adema.
Date: 15 March 2017
Venue: Coventry
Transport Museum, Starley Suite.
Time: 10.00-16.00
Concept
This symposium takes as its starting point Kamila Kuc’s latest book Visions
of Avant-Garde Film: Polish Cinematic Experiments from Expressionism to Constructivism (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2016), which argues for the importance of
the relationship between theory and practice in the processes of creating work that critically reflects upon the world we live in. This event aims to further develop the shared research ethos that ‘puts film-related theory into practice’ and vice versa, offering
a catalogue of experiences in contemporary moving image culture. Looking at a number of practices ranging from avant-garde found footage and alternative film to digital screen media, this event gathers the perspectives of scholars who are active as artists
and curators too, offering a first-hand account of the structural and conceptual bond between theory and practice.
Speakers include: Paula Albuquerque (University of Amsterdam), Greg de
Cuir (Belgrade), Bryan Konefsky (Albuquerque, New Mexico), Miriam de Rosa and Kamila Kuc (Coventry University).
