I'd also asked for suggestions on twitter, and had two replies with specific suggestions:

Historypin e.g. https://www.historypin.org/en/first-world-war-centenary/memories-for-a-new-generation/geo/-44.802034,153.670995,2/bounds/-86.674543,86.87412,70.977285,-139.53213/paging/1 Suggested by @Louisedenoon

Victorian Collections https://victoriancollections.net.au/ Suggested by @michellesmuses

Hi Emma

There was a recent thread on the MCG list about longform content - see https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind1702&L=mcg&D=0&P=18198 which I think is related.

Looks like you’re on WordPress with your main site - so my answer would be to do it there. Creating templates and bespoke functionality to do exhibition-like stuff is all par for the course with WP nowadays. We’ve been doing similar for Bristol Museums - see link above or (ugly) http://culturestory.co.uk for more info.

I’d personally avoid Google Arts & Culture - and in fact any 3rd party commercial entity - for the hosting/tools for this sort of “core” content. Google lose interest in stuff all the time, and just “sunset” things when they like - and then you’re in trouble. Also, last time I looked the exhibition building stuff Google provides is pretty underwhelming. But the sustainability element I think is more important to think about.

cheers

Mike

Thanks Elisa. I've had a look and it seems more geared towards audio guides though. Can anyone recommend anything else?

Thanks,
Emma

Hello everyone

I'm hoping someone might be able to help!

We are not currently a member of Google Arts & Culture, but are really keen to try developing our own online exhibitions. Can anyone suggest something similar (and free) that we can try out?

Many thanks,
Emma
