Micropublishing, teaching, digital research: different worlds, or all in a day's work for the (future) librarian? Talk by Frank Egerton, preceded by CILIP South East Member Network & CILIP Thames Valley AGM #

Thursday 6^th  April 2017, 14:00-18:00, Oxford

This talk will attempt to join up the worlds of creative writing, teaching, research, digital innovation and librarianship. Drawing on Frank’s experience in these areas, he will explore the opportunities offered by print-on-demand and e-book technologies, as well as looking at the ways in which online courses and digital methods are transforming teaching and research. A key question for him will be, what aspects of his lives outside the Bodleian are in fact skills that might readily transfer to a library context?

Frank Egerton originally qualified as an Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He gave up his job as a land agent to read English at Keble College, Oxford. He was a book reviewer writing for publications that included the Times, Financial Times and TLS from 1995-2008. He is the author of two novels, The Lock (Smaller Sky Books, 2003) and Invisible (StreetBooks, 2010: "...lively wit and acute understanding of the emotional landscape." Kate Saunders, The Times). The e-book edition of The Lock reached the finals of the Independent eBook Awards in Santa Barbara, USA. He is interested in both the close examination of fiction and how new technologies are changing the publishing industry. He is a core course tutor on the Oxford MSt in Creative Writing, Operations Manager at the Sackler, Taylor and Oriental Institute Libraries, a member of the Society of Authors, AWP and Writers in Oxford, and a former editor of The Oxford Writer. He was Chair of Writers in Oxford from 2008 to 2010. In 2010 he founded the micropublishing imprint StreetBooks. In 2016 he was co-investigator on a digital project looking at narrative shapes and has recently completed a memoir entitled Trust: A family story. He is a member of Kellogg College, University of Oxford
