CINCH Academy is a PhD summer program for research in Health Economics. It consists of lecture sessions and presentations, where participants present their own work. The first half of the course provides an overview on inequality in health, while the second part is dedicated to health econometric methods such as instrumental variables or dynamic panel data models.
Lectures will be given by Owen O’Donnell (Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Fank Windmeijer (University of Bristol). The program consists of around 30 hours of lectures and 10 hours of paper presentations. These presentations will be chaired by Maksym Obrizan (Kyiv School of Economics). They provide the opportunity for participants to receive constructive feedback on their own work.

Hosting Institution
CINCH is one of Germany’s leading research centers in Health Economics. The center is located in Essen and a joint venture of three institutions: the RWI Essen, the Faculty for Economics and Business Administration at the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. CINCH is funded through an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Instructors
Owen O’Donnell is Professor of Applied Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of Macedonia. He is a Senior Researcher at the University of Lausanne and a Research Fellow of the Tinbergen Institute, Netspar and the CESR/Schaefer Center for the Study of Health Inequality. Within the field of health economics, his research is concerned with health inequality, health care equity, disability insurance, medical expenditure risk and health insurance coverage in high and low income countries. He has published in the Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society and Demography, among others. He is co-author of Analyzing Health Equity Using Household Survey Data and has been a consultant to the World Bank, WHO and UNICEF. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Health Economics and Health Economics, and is co-organiser of the European Workshops on Econometrics and Health Economics.
Frank Windmeijer is Professor of Econometrics at the University of Bristol. His work focuses on causal inference, instrumental variables estimation and dynamic panel data models. Application of these within health economics have focused on the timing of treatment effects, the effects of waiting times targets, price elasticities of prescription drugs, and the use of genetic markers as instruments for modifiable risk factors. He has published in Econometrica, the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of Health Economics and Epidemiology, among others. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Econometrics.
