Statistical Methods in Diagnostic Studies
Date: 30th May
Location: S3RI Building 39, UoS, Highfield Campus

Summary of course
The course will focus on the application of statistical methods in diagnostic studies.

Aim and content of the course
The aim of the course is for attendees to be able to understand and use a broad range of statistical methods that may be used in the testing of a new diagnostic device or procedure. These methods include the standard diagnostic approaches to analysis, such as sensitivity, specificity and predictive values, as well as receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curves. More complex methods will involve the use of regression methods to assess the contribution of different measures to the diagnostic process, diagnostic score construction, and the comparison of several different approaches to diagnosis. Other issues relating to the design of diagnostic studies will also be covered. The course will include a mixture of taught and practical content using the software Stata.

The course is aimed at researchers who want to perform statistical analysis of diagnostic studies, and those hoping to understand how statistical methods can help in the design of studies.
