Youth Activism in an Age of Austerity

This full-time, 3-year PhD studentship, starting in September 2017, is funded by the ESRC North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) CASE studentship scheme. CASE studentships involve a PhD student working in partnership with an organisation to undertake research which is designed to be relevant to the organisation.
The studentship project
The aim of this studentship is to explore the participation of young people and youth engagement organisations in political decision-making and debates, and whether their voices are heard and included. In the context of deep public spending cuts and an increasingly competitive funding landscape, the possibilities for youth political participation have been called into question. There is a historic marginalisation of youth voices in political and economic decision-making, with very few mechanisms for inclusion beyond civil society organisations.

To explore these issues, the studentship takes RECLAIM, Manchester's leading Youth Engagement Charity, as a case study. RECLAIM is an award winning leadership and mentoring charity that endeavours to represent and champion the voices of young working class people politically, socially and culturally, so they can encourage those in power to incorporate and consider the views of future generations when making decisions that affect their lives. The study involves mixed methods research including ethnographic observations, youth-led participatory activities, interviews with key stakeholders and the co-production of an ethnographic film documentary. Taking a participatory research approach, the doctoral student will become embedded in the day-to-day youth engagement work of RECLAIM. The RECLAIM office is in close proximity to the University of Manchester where the student will be based for the remainder of the time.
The CASE student will be jointly supervised by Dr Sarah Marie Hall and Prof. Kevin Ward (Geography, University of Manchester), Dr Bethan Evans (Geography, University of Liverpool) and Dr Laura Pottinger (RECLAIM and Geography, University of Manchester).
