Reminder of upcoming deadline for submission of abstracts for the following session: Regimes of Energy Citizenship: thinking beyond market driven paradigms

Deadline for submission of abstracts is the 15th March.

Session Convenor(s)

Alexandra Revez, University College Cork, Ireland

The ongoing transition to a more sustainable energy future implies the emergence and production of new geographies, some of which remain to be determined. This envisaged decarbonisation of the energy system will both require, and result in substantial societal changes and will only be successful with the active involvement and consent of citizens.
Current evidence strongly suggests the dominance of policies which promote and conceive the public as ‘consumers’ or ‘active consumer’, whose purchasing decisions and consumption practices are seen as their only recognised participation in energy related matters. Arguably this market driven paradigm is limited in achieving the necessary changes for driving forth a sustainable energy agenda, both concerning social equality and justice and indeed as to its actual effectiveness in terms of achieving required changes in the energy system.
Rethinking and constructing new forms and regimes of energy citizenship which promote more active and equitable outcomes is therefore critical in promoting sustainable energy transitions. Looking to open up the path for alternative visions of energy citizenship would include:
•	Evaluating and critiquing the value and role of market driven policies;
•	Considering implications of different approaches to energy transitions and the forms of public participation that they support;
•	Considering the multitude of every day spaces where energy citizenship is enacted;
•	Tracing citizenship interactions between energy and other policy domains.

The aim of this session is to facilitate interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary discussion concerning energy citizenship and we welcome papers which explore these ideas around energy transitions and citizenship.
