Dear Friends,

I am delighted to welcome Sabine Hanke to the Network. Sabine is a first year PhD student within the University of Sheffield's History Department. Her research investigates the German and British stationary circus as a transnational history of popular entertainment. Her research interests include circus and popular culture studies, postcolonial theories, global micro-history and human-animal studies. Her PhD project is described below and I am sure that she would be pleased to hear from anyone here who has relevant information, sources and ideas. Sabine can be contacted at [log in to unmask]

Staging Local, Acting Global. A History of the German and British Circus (1890-1945)

The project investigates the German and British stationary circus as a transnational history of popular entertainment. The project aims to analyse the circus as space, where concepts of racism, imperialism and colonialism, as well as local social, economic and political impacts unfolded its effects onto the performing animals and humans. Starting with Busch circus in Berlin, Krone circus in Munich, and Sarrasani circus in Dresden, the project will further examine British circus enterprises. So far, I have in particular looked at the Dresden Sarrasani circus and its staging of 'American Indians' within colonial frameworks. This research will expand to British case studies.

Best wishes,

Ron
