Just An Ordinary Lawyer was premiered at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe. Through the story of Britain's first Black Head of Chambers and part-time judge Tunji Sowande, it looks at the history of Western imperialism and Black liberation struggles worldwide with words and song, occasionally venturing into that explosive world in which sport (particularly cricket) and politics collide. Reviewing Just An Ordinary Lawyer, Socialist Worker stated that “Every socialist, anti-racist and anti-imperialist will love this.” It received another 4-star review from the Guardian, who this time described it as "A fascinating show," while the Morning Star found it “Groundbreaking … superb … extraordinary.” It has recently been selected as a rare British contribution to the forthcoming National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in the USA. |
Aluko, who credits Paul Robeson with his transformation from architect to full-time performer said, "When Theatro Technis informed me of their intention to mark their 60th anniversary in collaboration with artists who had worked with them through the years, the double bill seemed exactly the right thing to do. I am grateful to them for their part in my artistic development, and I am also pleased that Camden Trades Council agreed so readily to collaborate with me on this venture." |
George Eugeniou of Theatro Technis said, "Tayo has been a great friend of ours since he first brought Robeson here in 2011. We are thrilled with the success he has enjoyed, and proud that he has brought so many people to our venue to see exactly the kind of radical work that we are all about." Camden Trades Council's Chairman George Binette said, 'Camden Trades Council is pleased and proud that Theatro Technis, a 60-year-old Camden venue, will play host on May Day to two productions that celebrate key figures in 20th century struggles against racism, colonialism and imperialism.' |
