--Apologies for cross-posting-- William Sitwell talk: Lord Woolton biography 3 May 2017, 5pm-7pm Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol Street, London, EC1Y 8LX As Masterchef returns to BBC1 this spring, we are delighted to welcome one of the programme's judges, the eminent food writer and critic William Sitwell, to the RSS to talk about his acclaimed biography of former RSS president Lord Woolton. The talk will be based on William Sitwell’s biography of him, Eggs to Anarchy: The Remarkable Story of the Man Tasked With the Impossible: To Feed a Nation at War. Sitwell’s talk will cover Woolton’s period as RSS President (from 1945 to 1947) and the use of statistics in the development of the policy for which he is best known - the points-based system of food rationing that was used in the Second World War and which survived well into the 1950s. The book has been praised as 'absorbing' by the Spectator, 'entertaining' by the Times and 'riveting' by Red magazine. Sitwell will be signing copies of the book at the end of the evening. RSS president David Spiegelhalter will also be attending. Attendance is free and open to all, but you must book a place here: https://events.rss.org.uk/rss/frontend/reg/thome.csp?pageID=35801&ef_sel_menu=723&eventID=119&eventID=119 For directions see www.rss.org.uk/findus.
