Women in the Literary Marketplace

This WiG-sponsored session at the GSA in Atlanta (October 5 – 8, 2017) aims at exploring what different forms of strategies women writers and publishers have employed over the course of the last 200+ years to negotiate and/or to re-define the literary market place through their presence as (career) writers and/or publishers.

We solicit papers that focus on the historical and present situation of ‘women in the literary marketplace’ from a variety of angles and welcome proposals that range from theoretical approaches to analyses of individual writers, groups, or types of media outlets.

Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

· How did or currently do women writers engage with the media of their time in publishing, marketing, and publicizing their work? How do they utilize other forms of art (performance art, music, photography, film, etc.) to promote their literary production (and vice versa) in order to heighten their public impact?

· What venues were open to women writers in earlier centuries? What barriers did they face and how did they overcome them (or not). What roles did male or female publishers, agents, or relatives play in promoting women authors?

· Is there evidence that women writers self-censor(ed) or tailor(ed) their works to achieve publication or reach a wider readership?

· How did/do women negotiate the literary marketplace in order to build a ‘career’ as writer or publisher that has allowed them to secure an adequate income from their work?

· How did/do they reflect on their roles as writers and/or publishers in correspondence, essays, interviews, etc.?
