Room QUE328, LSE Dr MartaEntradas, LSE: How are astronomers around the world communicating with society? Abstract Public engagement is a bustling activity amongstthe international community of astronomers: 87% reports communicating withnon-specialists, while 13% report no such activity. Furthermore, the level ofpublic engagement intensity, as compared to other scientific areas, is‘astronomical’. Within such a public ‘talkative’community, we ask two major questions: what makes an astronomer go ‘silent’ (not to communicate) and whatmakes an astronomer highly public ‘talkative’(communicate above the average)? We examine astronomers’ participation inpublic communication in relation to determinant influences ‘motives’,‘socio-demographics’, scientific productivity and cultural context.
