The Mass Media Institute,

2nd International Conference
on the Right of Freedom of Expression in
the Digital Age
University of Nicosia,
3-4 April 2017
Keynote Speaker: Professor Petros
Iosifidis, City, University of London, UK
Description:
The right of freedom of expression and
the principle of a free press are the pillars of contemporary democracy. As digital forms ofcommunication
continue to spread, the limits on freedom of expression are
seemingly more palpable, particularly in certain partsof the world. Professional journalists are struggling to (re)establish and maintain public trust and confidence in their
work, whilst the emergence of participatory journalism challenges the status and values of the
profession.
This two-day conference offers
a timely space for scholars and practitioners to explore the broader issue offreedom ofexpression,
with a particular interest in the institutional right of freedom of the
media. We would like to investigate whether the inalienable right of freedom of expression and
its corollary right of freedom of the
media/press are limitless and boundless in the digital age; whether digital forms of communication have revolutionized the mode, the methods and the means of journalism.
We invite papers from both scholars and practitioners.
Suggested topics might include the following, but are not limited to:
· The
limits of freedom of expression and/or freedom of the

· Freedom of expression in
