Couldn't agree more - email is absolutely the right medium for this, and I wasn't suggesting that Slack should replace it. That'd be insanity. But there are sometimes dev centric questions that suit a more immediate medium, and I was wondering if Slack could perform that purpose. Maybe not.

Dear MCGers,

“MCG Slack channel, anyone?"

Could not agree more with Mia: Slack is useful (happy to report we're using here in Geneva with a team working on manuscript transcriptions mainly as a Q&A platform), but the limitation of 10'000 messages is very annoying to say the least.

Imagine the MCG archive being only partially accessible. I was very disappointed when I realised they had this limitation (which is in place even for non-profit or charity licences for Slack). There are others who showed their frustration over this:

"Slack’s cheapest plan was $5 per user, per month. That’s $5 x 12 months x 8,462 campers = $507,720 per year, just for our current campers. Until we paid, Slack would aggressively archive messages, sometimes only minutes after they were sent. Slack’s support team told us that if we wanted this message to go away, we would need to create an integration that exported the messages, then deleted them." [this was written in 2015]

The workaround solution offered (delete messages after export) is simply ridiculous and defeats the purpose of having such a collaborative work space / knowledge base which would have to permanently self-destruct in order to make way for the new (or find important financial resources to sustain it).

Best,

Radu

There are already various museumy Slacks but none with real traction that I know of. In general I prefer old-fashioned mailing lists because anyone can find and access the archives (and they keep more than the last 10,000 comments).

I'm sure James will pop back soon to explain Slack for those wondering what on earth we're on about! :)

We use with select projects and initiatives at Serpentine, especially for digital projects with external collaborators - but have yet to dare trying to shift the organisation over. Any relevant material or write ups on managing those kinds of transitions inside an organisation appreciated!

Asking for a friend ...

How many of you are are actively using Slack in your organisations, and does anyone work somewhere where it has been been blocked for 'security reasons'?

Thanks, James
