CFP: The Timeliness and Timelessness of Stefan Zweig MLA 2018 (Austrian Studies Association Panel)
Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) has been rediscovered in recent years. New translations of his works and numerous academic
studies have contributed to a renewed interest in this Austrian-Jewish author. According to the
Economist, Zweig “seems more apt than ever” today. In a recent article in the
The New Yorker, George Prochnik pointed out parallels between Zweig’s depiction of Europe’s political landscape in the 1930’s and current developments in the US. This panel aims to address political aspects in Zweig’s oeuvre. Papers may address Zweig’s
stance as a humanist and pacifist; political aspects in his memoir The World of Yesterday and his biographies; Zweig’s assessment of North and South America; and political notions in his novellas and novels. Other related topics are welcome. Please
