Dear Gerrit,

Effectively this type of fault does not exist in the Dictionnaire de Géologie of A. Foucault and J.-F. Raoult (Masson, 1980).
Depending on the context, this can also be a "Tear fault".

Hi to all those who have responded.

From all the comments and suggestions the term which is inclusive of all the suggestions is "Relay or Transfer fault". The term was given in a list which must be ticked and then described in the report. Our translator is well familiar with all the geological terms but this was new to her.

Thanks a lot. There is no need in invent new terminologies when they already exist.

Gerrit

Hi people,

Is the report french as well?

French geologist, but I never heard about the terminology "faille de rattachement" to describe a fault. Can't find it in my french geology dictionaries. Maybe be an outdated term?

It sounds to me like a detachment fault, because the overlying faults can "se rattacher" to the "faille de rattachement", but the sentence or the context might help more.

All the best,
