Resilience – a Challenge for Sustainable Urban and Regional Development Hofgeismar (near Kassel, Germany), July 24 – 27, 2017 The “International Doctoral Colloquium in Sustainable Spatial Development” provides PhD students with an opportunity to present and discuss their ongoing dissertations with fellows and professors in a supportive environment. The DoKoNaRa aims at helping participants to develop research ideas, focus the theoretical background of their research, develop a suitable research design, present their findings, and cope with challenges during their research. It is designed to encourage and inspire PhD students at all stages of their PhD. Contributions are welcomed from a wide array of subjects, such as urban and regional planning, landscape planning, regional science, geography, sociology, economics, environmental science, law, politics, anthropology and so forth. The colloquium is held annually since 2007 and is organised alternately by the Universities of Innsbruck, Kassel, Liechtenstein and Hamburg. This year's colloquium will take place from July 24 to 27 at the town of Hofgeismar (near Kassel in Germany). The programme will consist of presentations and discussions of the participants' PhD projects, a keynote address, a workshop on quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as a visit with a guided tour to the documenta 14 (one of the most renowned international exhibitions on contemporary art, held at Kassel). This year’s colloquium will focus on urban and regional resilience. However, contributions concerning related issues are likewise appreciated. Resilience can be described as the ability to cope with and to recover from external crises and shocks. In a broader sense, resilience also encompasses the ability to adapt to external influences in the sense of a strategic transformation towards sustainability. A wide array of developments – including (but not limited to) demographic and climate change and economic restructuring – is currently challenging the resilience of regions across Europe and other parts of the world. Urban, as well as rural, regions are affected. Against this backdrop, the colloquium seeks solutions for the following issues: • How can regional resilience be conceptualised? How can regional resilience be operationalised and measured? Is there a value-added compared to the concept of sustainability? • Which regions have a particularly high or low resilience? Is regional resilience rising or declining? • What factors influence regional resilience? What are the key players and stakeholders influencing regional resilience? • How can regional resilience be enhanced? Language: German and English. Participants will be offered the opportunity to submit contributions to the conference proceedings. Texts will be peer-reviewed. Venue: Evangelische Akademie Hofgeismar, Gesundbrunnen 11, Hofgeismar. Timeline: • April 15, 2017: deadline for the submission of abstracts. Please send your abstract to [log in to unmask] The abstract must not exceed 4.000 characters. Abstracts must be in English or German. • May 15, 2017: information about the acceptance of abstracts. The number of participants is limited in order to provide a suitable frame for exchange and discussion. Selection will be based upon the quality of abstracts. • July 24 – July 27, 2017: DoKoNaRa – we welcome you at Hofgeismar! Participants of the colloquium will be asked to prepare a presentation of approximately 30 minutes about their PhD projects. Using alternative visualisation techniques rather than presentation software is especially appreciated. Workshop materials will be provided. • September 15, 2017: deadline for the submission of contributions to the proceedings. Details will be announced during the DoKoNaRa. Cost: The participation fee will be Euro 150,- and will comprise accommodation, meals, and programme. Accommodation will be in single rooms. Special dietary requirements will be catered for. The visit and the guided tour to the documenta 14 are included in the participation fee.
