Fixed-term position for 33 weeks

The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. The Gallery attracts over 2 million visits a year and is among London's most popular attractions, it reaches and engages these, and further UK and global audiences, with its extensive display, exhibition, research, learning, outreach, publishing, digital and national programmes.

In 2016 the Gallery received funding from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives to catalogue and promote archives associated with Lucian Freud (1922-2011) and members of his family. We require a Project Archivist to undertake this work. These records are part of the Gallery's Collected Archives and when catalogued will provide invaluable insight into the development of Freud's artistic practice and aspects of his early family life. These archives include multiple volumes of Lucian Freud's sketchbooks, loose childhood drawings and correspondence, as well as exhibition and private view cards, texts, recordings, press-cuttings and a collection of ephemera spanning his career. The archives also contain records associated with Lucian's parents Ernst and Lucie Freud (nee Brash) including correspondence between the couple and letters written by their sons following the family's relocation from Germany to England in 1933.

The successful candidate will possess a degree and a recognised Post-Graduate qualification in Archives Administration as well as demonstrable relevant experience in cataloguing archive collections and German language proficiency. We are also looking for a candidate who is methodical, accurate and careful and possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
