Dear Dana,

There is no such thing as a "correct" smoothing size. Given the assumptions used by SPM when doing statistical comparisons, you'd better have a smoothing kernel that it's 3 times your voxel size (so anything bigger than 6x6x6 is ok).

Anyway, 8 mm is kind of the de-facto standard. The rule of thumb is that if you are looking for effects that involve very large areas you should use large kernels (10 or maybe even 12 mm). If you are looking for extremely localized (but intense) effects you should use small kernels (8 mm, or maybe even 6).

The manual recommends smoothing 8-10mm but our voxel sizes are 2x2x2mm. What would you recommend for us?
