Hi Mary,

Interesting find. I don't have similar research but makes me think maybe students from deprived backgrounds have more pressure from parents to do well in school who may also suggest jobs and career pathways that they believe leads to promising financial outcomes. Just a thought.

Pupils from better backgrounds may also have more opportunities, such as summer schools, tutoring etc and may explain their feelings of ownership and control.

Thanks for the interesting contributions.

Best wishes,

Tay

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Literature pointer

Dear colleagues,

Whilst evaluating a STEM outreach project we have some results which seem to suggest pupils from less socio-economically deprived backgrounds feel they have 'ownership' over their own education and career aspirations, whilst those from more socio-economically deprived backgrounds see education and career choice as something that just happens to them. Is anyone aware of similar findings in the literature, or theorising on this area?

With thanks in advance for any pointers.

Kind regards,
