Dear science communicators,

There's a lovely event coming up which is aimed primarily at early career researchers in ecology/environment, but is certainly open and relevant to science communication. It's at Oxford Town Hall, 2nd February, 9-5, with refreshments through the day and lunch provided. Also an opportunity to talk to various science groups such as Zooniverse, Freshwater Watch, etc.

I will be leading an interactive session on the wellbeing of citizen scientists and community building. There will be several other sessions - described below.

Have you ever wondered how citizen science projects are created? Do you want to learn how to engage the UK public with issues of environmental concern? On 2nd February, an all-day training day will be held in Oxford, UK. It is funded by the National Environment Research Council (NERC) and will involve interactive sessions by speakers from UCL’s Extreme Citizen Science Department, the Zooniverse (Oxford University), EarthWatch and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. This is a unique opportunity for participants to learn from experienced researchers in the field, such as Prof. Muki Haklay (UCL, co-director of the ‘Extreme Citizen Science’ Research Group) and Dr Michael Pocock (CEH,senior scientist at CEH).

The workshop will provide both theoretical and practical knowledge about the use and benefits of citizen science in environmental sciences.

The training will take participants through techniques and goals of developing a citizen science project, including project design, recruitment and retention of volunteers, reporting, monitoring and evaluation, costing as well as issues to consider. The context for these sessions will be related to environment, ecology, light pollution and human wellbeing. There will also be dedicated time for Q&A and networking.

Attendance to the workshop is free (lunch and snacks included throughout the workshop), with the option of going out to dinner afterwards (not included). The (optional) meal will be at COSMO (8 Magdales Street, Oxford, OX1 3AD) from 18:00.

Priority will be given to early career researchers, especially PhD students funded by NERC or working in environmental science or ecology, so please say a little about yourself if you sign up. However, we have up to 50 places, so even if this does not match your background, please apply and we will try to accommodate you!

To book your place please book. The training day will be held in the Assembly Room at the Oxford Town Hall, Oxford (UK).

We look forward to seeing you there!

For further information or to book your place for the optional meal, please contact Valentine Seymour
