Hi Jenny,

I have been looking into education and citizen science for my dissertation, and found a document (here: https://wellcome.ac.uk/sites/default/files/science-education-tracker-wellcome-feb16.pdf) to be incredibly helpful (and interesting as well). It should be helpful for you as well, as it covers STEM education (barriers, challenges, motivations and so on) quite well, at least to understand a part of the wider picture.

Hope this helps (at least a little!).

Bests,

When you ask “Does a solid scientific education affect the choices people make?” it certainly affect career choices.

A scientific education allows many more choices. You can take up a career within science, or you can opt for a career in any of the domains that do not demand a vocational training. For example, with extra training, scientists can go on to become lawyers but it is much harder to turn a law degree into a career in science.

That is why I advise those entertaining a move into science writing to take their scientific education as far as possible. Once you have made the move it is hard to retrace your steps.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me suggestions on and off the list - I'm really appreciative that you've taken the time to do so.

In terms of the audience, it's very broad (different ages, different backgrounds) hence the wide nature of the question!

I can perhaps narrow it down a bit - I'm especially keen to know if there are any studies that show the impact of studying science - does it affect how school leavers feel about certain topics? Does a solid scientific education affect the choices people make? Still quite vague, but if there's anything out there I'm sure this mailing list is the place to find it!

All the best and thanks again,
Jenny

Hi Jenny, hi all,
It's an old reference now, but Jonathan Silvertown's "New Dawn for Citizen Science" 2009, gives a nice overview of where the field has come from and where it was at the time of writing https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Jonathan_Silvertown/publication/26655910_A_new_dawn_for_citizen_science/links/548aaa720cf214269f1ad1eb.pdf

As others have said, the Citizen Science Association (US-based but members from around the world) is a good place to start http://citizenscience.org/ - they produce a journal and the editorial for the first issue last year gives a good overview too http://theoryandpractice.citizenscienceassociation.org/articles/10.5334/cstp.65/

Best wishes,
