Teena,

I’m assuming one goal in this conversation is to ultimately reduce antagonism. To that end, might I suggest that a conversation not specifically about Luiza Prado’s twitter statements should get a new subject line?

Can I also suggest that, when appropriate, questions and claims are as clear and specific as fits the need of the exchange? For instance, when Don claimed someone had behaved badly, you asked by what standards. I answered. Then you said:

> "I think we have to step away from the specificities of the recent
> exchange between particular men and particular women you describe and
> to which Don reacted and consider what constitutes 'behaving badly' in
> systemic institutional ways, over time, using a kind of gang mentality
> that has deep and lasting impacts on those who offer alternative
> views. And consider on whose terms, in what contexts, and who gets to
> decide good/bad behaviour in academic debate. This is the question I
> was posing to Don."

I still assumed that the subject was primarily behavior in context of this list. When Fil asked that specific (even if hypothetical) examples be included to illuminate any generalities so that he might better understand, I am guessing that he shared my assumption that the topic was gendered communication relating to this list. (Fil—Sorry if I misinterpret.)

If anyone on the list doesn’t believe that there are many, many egregious examples of sexist bigotry in the world in general or academia in particular, I would be horrified at their ignorance. It seems undeniable to me. (As you will recall, I’ve exchanged examples with you off list.) But I do not believe that the equivalent of most of your examples take place on this list. (Note that I am *not* claiming there is no evidence of bigotry in interactions here.) So I am at a loss to understand what you think Fil asked and why.

The part of your reply to Fil that applied to this list is also the part that seems to include some non-obvious example of what you mean by gendered practices:

> Each and every post supporting Luiza is a
> (lived, not hypothetical) example of the material effects of gendered
> practices on real bodies.

How were the supporting posts gendered practices and how do we determine that? Were posts not supporting her also gendered practices and, if so, how? And what do we make of all of these gendered practices?
