THE PRINCIPAL (Elsie Fogerty) and SHEPHERD (Contemporary Theatre Review) STUDENTSHIPS

The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London invites applications for the Principal (Elsie Fogerty) and Shepherd (Contemporary Theatre Review) studentships for new PhD students in September or January during the 2017/8 academic year.

Central is pleased to announce these two fully funded studentships that offer an exciting opportunity for suitably qualified candidates to undertake doctoral study in the field of drama, theatre, and performance.

In the space of less than a decade, Central has built up a unique culture of postgraduate research in cultural histories of performance and modes of theatre-making. We welcome applications in any of the following areas of specialization:

·         applied and social theatre (including theatre and health care, queer performance, and theatre and social/cultural policy)

·         British and European theatre practices (including playwriting, translation and adaption, choreography and movement, ensemble, and interdisciplinary work)

·         film and theatre acting (including work across the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as international practices, and voice and movement studies)

·         theatre history and historiography (including work in dance history and feminist theatre histories)

·         curation and documentation

·         performance and technology (technology in performance, and digital methods for the study of performance)

·         film theory and film analysis

·         performance environments, scenography and sound design

Home and EU students are eligible for a full award. This amounts to the total value of tuition fees plus a £15,500 maintenance grant, matching a fully funded AHRC studentship, offered for up to three years for new first-year students. The award for overseas students is a 50% fee waiver and a £15,500 maintenance grant. All students will also be eligible for an additional £500 annual research budget for conference attendance and specialist training.

The Shepherd (Contemporary Theatre Review) studentship will be accompanied by a three-year responsibility as editorial assistant on the international journal, Contemporary Theatre Review; this will involve working closely with the editors and associate editors of the journal on the four annual issues for each year of the studentship.

The Principal (Elsie Fogerty) studentship will be accompanied by a three-year responsibility to work on the planning and delivery of research conferences at Central.

The programme offers successful candidates two possible points of entry: October 2017 and January 2018, and awards are applicable to both starting dates. Applicants should normally hold, or be studying for, a Master's degree in drama, theatre or performance studies or a cognate discipline (e.g. cultural studies, classical studies, European studies, English literature).

All applicants need to prepare an Expression of Interest form in advance of making a formal application. This can be downloaded from within the online application, following links through the School’s website. The deadline (for both awards) for the receipt of online applications is Monday 20 February 2017.
