medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Perhaps some useful (comparative) material is contained in Adrian Mihai,
L'Hadès céleste: histoire du purgatoire dans l'Antiquité. Paris: 2015. In
this work, the author analizes a three-fold division of the “Hadès céleste”,
identified by him as a sort of ancient cosmic place forerunner of Christian
purgatory (pace Le Goff)...

Hi,

Actually my book does cover this particular vision on pp. 223–25 and
includes a brief bibliography of five works on this text, but my discussion
does not go into your particular question, to which I don’t know the answer.
I have never come across this three-fold division of purgatory in any other
context that I can recall.

I don’t know if Marta Harley, who edited this text in the 1980s, went into
this question, but you might want to look at her edition (and translation)
Harley, Marta Powell. A Revelation of Purgatory by an Unknown,
Fifteenth-Century Woman Visionary: Introduction, Critical Text, and
Translation. Lewiston: E. Mellen Press, 1985.

Two other works that might be helpful are:
Moreira, Isabel. Heaven's Purge: Purgatory in Late Antiquity. New York:
Oxford University Press, 2010. (Even though her discussion focuses on an
earlier period, she is up-to-date on all things purgatory.)
Carozzi, Claude. Le voyage de l'âme dans l'au-delà, d'après la littérature
latine: Ve-XIIIe siècle. Roma, Italie: Ecole française de Rome, 1994.

I have the feeling, however, that this description is anomalous, but I’d
definitely be curious to know if you find out otherwise.

Best,
Eileen

Le Goff discusses these three purgatories, esp. in his chapter on Scholastic
Systematization, but he does not mention them by the terms used in the
anonymous text.
The Gardner book is concerned with texts too early for this categorization.

might these three purgatories be alternative names for the Limbo of the
fathers (purgatory of justice?), Limbo of the unbaptized infants (purgatory
of mercy?) and the 'normal' purgatory (purgatory of grace?).

Meg, I don't think these levels of purgatory are part of the "official"
teaching on the subject. I just checked the relevant section in Ludwig Ott's
Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma (1952), a handy guide for such things, and
there is nothing of the kind there. The Supplement to Thomas Aquinas' Summa
says only that the intensity and duration of the purgation are proportional
to the faults (Summa theol., III, Supplementum, q. 70, art. 3
<http://www.newadvent.org/summa/5070.htm>).

I think this idea is more likely to come from the visions of purgatory so
common among mystics, especially women, in the medieval period. If memory
serves St Francesca Romana (d. 1444) also saw a three-level purgatory, but
I'm not sure if she was before or after the anonymous author you mention.

The latest serious work on the idea of purgatory is Diana Walsh Pasulka,
Heaven Can Wait: Purgatory in Catholic Devotional and Popular Culture,
Oxford: OUP, 2015; and of course there is Jacques Le Goff's The Birth of
Purgatory, Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1984. Eileen Gardiner
(ed.), Medieval Visions of Heaven and Hell: A Sourcebook New York: Garland
Pub, 1993, might also be helpful. -- Paul

In Medieval Writings on Female Spirituality ed. with an introduction and
notes by Elizabeth Spearing. Penguin Books. 2002 p. 223 an anonymous
visionary mentions 3 types of purgatory, the purgatory of justice, purgatory
of mercy, purgatory of grace. Has anyone heard of these levels of purgatory
in a more learned theological context?
Thanks and Happy New Year,
Meg
