The Challenge of Digital Scholarship - emerging practices in academic libraries

University of Salford, MediaCityUK Campus

Thursday 19th January, 11.00am – 3.00pm

The event considers the progress UK and Irish academic libraries are making in support of emerging digital practices and asks how digital scholarship is distinct from other forms of scholarship.  It will look at what skills librarians need to thrive in a digital environment and how expertise in libraries is evolving to ensure digital resilience, providing real-life examples of digital scholarship in practice, with case studies from several HEIs.

What’s the plan for the day?

It will be an interactive event with thought-provoking discussion, presentations and workshops from academic institutions across the UK and Ireland.  All speakers have been tasked with bringing their case study to life in an engaging way so prepare to be wowed!  The programme will provide plenty of opportunities for discussion, so come armed with your questions and ideas.

Who’s the event aimed at?

The event has a broad appeal to subject/academic librarians; archive/special collections staff; supervisors/heads of section interested in staffing/staff development.  If you are interested in digital scholarship but don’t fall into any of those categories, however, please feel free to sign up!

Who are the speakers?

·       Alison MacKenzie and Lindsey Martin from Edge Hill University
Alison and Lindsey, as editors of the newly published book, will set the scene and provide an overview of the current landscape in digital scholarship.  They will also facilitate activities during the event.

·       Chris Awre from the University of Hull
The University of Hull’s case study centres on their repository solution, Hydra, to support identified needs to manage, preserve and present structured digital content, produced through scholarship and university administration.

·       Jane Harvell from the University of Sussex

The University of Sussex’s case study showcases the Sussex Humanities Lab, which aims to develop new forms of digital humanities and bring together researchers from across disciplines and units to develop expertise to lead and support research.

·       Ian Johnson from the University of Newcastle
Newcastle University’s Poetics of the Archives is an AHRC-funded project to present the archive of Bloodaxe Books using visual representation, which encourages “innovation and serendipity as an alternative approach to research.”

·       John Cox from the National University of Ireland, Galway
The National University of Ireland’s case study focuses on the work undertaken to digitise the Abbey Theatre Archive, one of the world’s most significant theatre collections.

·       Kirsty Kift from the University of Coventry
The University of Coventry’s case study highlights the work of the Disruptive Media Learning Lab at the university and provides an insight into digital scholarship in practice.
